The more we rely on fossil fuels, the more we can expect to see our environment damaged by its effects. It’s essential that things start changing immediately and one of the best ways to start out is with autos. Cars contribute towards the emissions released which can hurt the environment, so it’s not surprising that auto manufacturers have begun producing eco friendly vehicles.

The most environmentally friendly vehicle, from the wide choice there is, may well be the car that runs fully on battery. A battery powered car has no need for any petrol or diesel at all as it’s solely powered by electricity coming from the battery. Although this looks great from the point of view fuel savings and the effect on the environment, there are disadvantages. These automobiles are still in the early phase even though they are already available to consumers, so their engines are quite restricted. After a distance of approximately 100 miles, you will need to be prepared to recharge the battery.

The hybrid car is another type of car consumers can purchase. They make use of both a battery and gas and are eco friendly. So if you want to know, this is how this type of car works in practical terms. It is the power generated by the battery that is used first by the car. When the car reaches a specific speed, it shifts to using petrol, which gives it lots of of power for the highway. The need to charge the battery again is eliminated as this is done as the petrol is consumed.

Plug-in hybrid cars are yet one more choice of car. They operate much in the same way as the previous hybrid and won’t harm the environment. There is one difference and that is that plug-in hybrid vehicles have to be hooked up to an external power source to recharge the battery, whereas the standard hybrid car can automatically recharge the battery by itself. As for fuel consumption, both hybrid car types seem to perform better than your regular car.

A good example of a hybrid vehicle that can give you 50 miles to the gallon is the Prius from Toyota. With a price tag in the region of $22,000, this hybrid car has become a best seller. Toyota is not the only one who is in the hybrid car market, however; Honda has created the ‘Insight’ and in fact this was the first hybrid car to be released to consumers. It helped promote awareness among consumers for hybrids and paved the way for the Prius hybrid car. The Ford Fusion Hybrid, which is sold for about $27,000, has various awards to its name. In the United States, the Ford Fusion has been bestowed the award of being the best hybrid on the market. A hybrid which is thought to produce zero emissions whatsoever is the i-MiEV from Mitsubishi. It was among the early electric cars to be produced by a Japanese auto company.

There are also many other hybrid and eco friendly cars available to consumers, and as we go on developing improved technologies, more and more efficient cars are created and are available to buy.
